Making Kaziranga Safer for Greater One-Horned Rhinos

Rhinos live under constant threat of poaching for their horns, but some good news has recently come out of India—data indicates that no greater one-horned rhinos were poached in Kaziranga National Park, located in the Indian state of Assam, in 2022. This is the first year that the park has seen no loss of rhinos to poachers since 1977.

Kaziranga is home to the world’s largest population of this rhino species, making this news incredibly welcome in the fight to protect them from wildlife criminals. The greater one-horned rhino, also known as the Indian rhino, is one of the few rhino species slowly increasing in population thanks to the dedication of the Indian government to protect them. Conservation groups like Aaranyak, an RRF grantee, have also spent years working to protect greater one-horned rhinos within Assam and played a large part in this success.
